Basement Bedrooms

Elevate Your Space, Enhance Your Home

No Guest Room? No Problem! Build a Basement Bedroom!

It’s true that basements are mostly underground, and therefore, often somewhat lacking in natural light. But think of all the bright spaces you have been in that don’t have any windows — gymnasiums, office buildings, Ikea. Since electric lights were invented, there is no need for humans to spend time in the dark (unless they want to).

If you do happen to have a few basement windows or a pair of sliding glass doors, these will help brighten up the space. But if you don’t, don’t worry! We can brighten up the space for you.

We are so grateful we found Brian and Ryan! Finishing an unfinished basement can easily be overwhelming. However, Basement Builders completed the task in a timely manner with clear communication throughout the whole process. In addition, they gave us a competitive quote. The crew are great to work with, and happily adjusted plans when ideas came to mind along the way. We were comfortable having them in our home, and are very approachable. If an item needed fixing or adjusting, they always resolved the issue swiftly; we are confident in contacting them following this experience if something needs to be fixed. We have no regrets using Basement Builders, and will use them in the future when we are ready for additional projects.

We had a great overall experience working with Utah Basement Builders! They gave us a competitive quote and, most impressively, stuck to that budget. Brian and Ryan’s crews worked efficiently, and we are very pleased with the quality of the finished work. There were some delay’s with working into subcontractor’s schedules, but the communication was great, and we felt like we always had a good idea of what was going on. We recommend them!

Brian and team finished our basement on time, despite the many additions and alterations along the way. My wife and I had a good initial gut feeling about Brian, and he followed through, impressing us the whole way to finish. Communication could not have been better, quality was great, prices were very fair. I highly recommend this company.

I needed my basement to be turned into a walkout apartment. It was a big ask. They took my vision and made it work. Literally everything I asked for was done. I was most impressed with the communication. They were quick to respond and asked me questions of what I wanted for the entire project. They stayed on budget which I know is a rare thing. I have worked with two others companies on home projects and have never been on budget. Their original quote was accurate and only changed if I made changes from the original agreement. Quality was beyond my expectations. I will absolutely work with them again. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Brian & Ryan are fabulous to work with. Their quote was the most reasonable and their quality finishing my entire basement apartment was superb - everyone who visits talks about how high quality the work is, what nice craftsmanship. They were flexible and happy to work with me on a few new requests as we went along.
Adding a Kitchen To A Basement? Here's What to Expect

Basement Bedrooms with Window Wells

A basement bedroom must legally have proper egress, otherwise, it is not safe for anyone to sleep there. Different jurisdictions have different rules about windows, such as how many square inches it must be and how high off the ground is acceptable.

If your windows don’t meet code — and even if they do — you may want to consider a window well. When we build window wells, we replace your window with a larger one and we excavate the area outside of it so that sleepers can quickly get to safety in case of fire.

Sometimes homeowners want a window well with a ladder, but in any case, these structures are a great source of extra natural light. You can even opt for window well liners with beautiful pictures of the ocean, mountains, jungle, sea, or one of hundreds of other scenes.

Lighting for Basement Bedrooms

While recessed lighting is common in basements partly due to the lower ceilings, homeowners often choose a different type of lighting for a bedroom. Bright ceiling fixtures with dimmer switches are a popular option. You want to be able to make the room bright for daytime use, but also have low lighting available for nighttime. You may want to add bedside lamps for this purpose as well.

Fixtures mounted on walls are another practical solution. They provide needed light without causing concern regarding headroom.

Those who opt for basement finishing also often choose to paint the walls white or another bright color to lighten up the space. Teenagers with a basement bedroom may be more inclined toward darker colors and lower lighting, but you can always repaint when they move out.T

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you add a legal bedroom to a basement in Utah?

Yes. Utah Basement Builders builds basement bedrooms with proper planning for egress windows, insulation, electrical work, and the safety requirements that apply in Utah communities.

Why should I add a bedroom to my finished basement?

A basement bedroom adds flexible living space for guests, children, growing families, older teens, or multigenerational living. It’s also one of the more effective ways to add value, a bedroom addition typically increases home value by 10% to 15%.

What is an egress window, and why does a basement bedroom need one?

An egress window provides an emergency exit and natural light, and it’s required in any basement bedroom to meet safety codes. Utah building departments typically require a minimum window opening size and a permanently attached ladder if the window well is deep enough to need one.

How do you keep basement bedrooms warm and comfortable?

Basement bedrooms have one comfort factor other rooms don’t: the egress window itself. Utah Basement Builders uses properly insulated, high-quality window and well assemblies along with standard basement insulation and HVAC planning to prevent drafts and keep the room warm through Utah winters.

Can a basement bedroom include a walk-in closet or custom storage?

Yes. Utah Basement Builders can design walk-in closets, built-in shelving, wardrobes, under-stair storage, and custom closet systems, often as part of a broader custom cabinet solutions plan for the basement.

Can basement bedrooms feel bright and open?

Basement bedrooms get most of their natural light through the egress window, so sizing and placing that window well is the biggest factor in how bright the room feels. Beyond that, Utah Basement Builders uses light-colored finishes and layered lighting to keep the space from feeling closed in.

Can you build multiple bedrooms in one basement?

Yes. Utah Basement Builders can design layouts with two or more basement bedrooms while still including bathrooms, living areas, storage, and comfortable traffic flow.

How long does it take to build a basement bedroom?

A basement bedroom typically takes three to four weeks to build on its own, covering framing, electrical rough-in, drywall, and flooring. The timeline runs longer when the bedroom is part of a larger basement finish or when an egress window needs to be added. Utah Basement Builders provides a project schedule after reviewing the layout and design details.
